The Tuscia Territory

Tuscia was the denomination given to southern Etruria at the end of the etruscan rule.

Tuscia indicated originally a very large territory that was divided in several areas from different historical events.

Tuscia is considered nowadays the land of the Etruscans and it conserves the same flavour and culture, offering a choice of natural and cultural activities.

The territory coincides mostly with the province of Viterbo, touched by the Via Francigena an historical route for thousands of pilgrims, located in the northern part of Lazio.

This area can be divided in seven interesting parts; each of them is characterized by important elements that link several villages, so that the tourist can appreciate different kind of hospitality.

First of all Viterbo, the City of the Popes, with his historical medieval centre named San Pellegrino, the Palazzo dei Papi, the fountains, dating different historical ages and the famous thermal area, in the northern area we can found the Maremma, with the enchanting sea-side, the salt- works,  the natural reserve of Lamone, the Etruscan necropolis and their museums.

Going north we’ll get in the lake area of Bolsena, from volcanic origin, and all around we’ll find a series of magnificent villages.

The east side on the Teverina area with its “calanchi” made of clay, a natural wonder of rare curiosity, and the 'holy wood' of Bomarzo.

On the southern side we’ll find the Cimini Mounts with many villages of ancient flavour developed around the Lake of Vico with their typical products, such as walnuts, chestnuts, mushrooms and fabulous vineyards. In this area there is the most important concentration of Italians Historical Gardens, you can visit “Villa Lante” in Bagnaia, the Garden of the Ruspoli’s Castle in Vignanello and “Palazzo Farnese” in Caprarola.

Going south, around the neighbourhood of Rome, there is an industrial area famous for its ceramics and full of evocative villages around the river Treja.

The southern area, with the historical park of Sutri and the Etruscan necropolis of the protected area of Marturanum, represents a great archaeological interest.
